FAQ
How do I calculate fleet fuel cost per mile? +
Cost per mile = diesel price / fuel efficiency (mpg). At $5.13/gal and 7 mpg, cost per mile = $0.733. For a 10,000-mile truck per month, fuel cost = $7329/month per truck. The fleet calculator above scales this by number of trucks and lets you apply a fleet card discount to see potential savings.
What is a fuel surcharge and how is it calculated? +
A fuel surcharge (FSC) is an added cost per mile or per load that shippers pay to trucking companies when diesel exceeds a baseline price. The OOIDA (Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association) methodology calculates FSC as the fuel cost increment above baseline divided by miles per gallon, normalized to a per-mile rate. Example: if baseline is $3.00/gal and current price is $5.13/gal, the increment is $2.13. At 7 mpg baseline, FSC = $2.13 / 7 = $0.30/mile. Multiply by load miles to get per-load surcharge.
How much can a fleet card save per month? +
At 10,000 miles/month per truck and 7 mpg, a truck burns approximately 1,429 gallons/month. At 15 cents/gal savings (Comdata at Pilot), that's $214/truck/month or $2,571/year. At 40 cents/gal (Comdata at TA Petro), savings are $571/truck/month or $6,857/year. For a 10-truck fleet: $2,140/month at 15 cents, $5,710/month at 40 cents. Fleet card annual savings consistently exceed the cost of the program for fleets fueling over 2,000 gal/month.
