How do I calculate fleet fuel cost per mile? +
Cost per mile = diesel price / fuel efficiency (mpg). At $5.60/gal and 7 mpg, cost per mile = $0.800. For a 10,000-mile truck per month, fuel cost = $7999/month per truck. The fleet calculator above scales this by number of trucks and lets you apply a fleet card discount to see potential savings.
What is a fuel surcharge and how is it calculated? +
A fuel surcharge (FSC) is an added cost per mile or per load that shippers pay carriers when diesel exceeds a baseline price. The OOIDA methodology takes the fuel cost increment above that baseline, divides by miles per gallon, and expresses it per mile. Worked at the current EIA US average: with a $3.00/gal baseline and a current price of $5.599, the increment is $2.599. At 7 mpg that is $0.371 per mile. Multiply by load miles for the per-load surcharge.
