Why Diesel Costs $6.35/Gal Right Now

Diesel ran $2.08/gal above regular gasoline ($4.27) in the EIA survey week of October 26, 2026. In 2026 to date the gap has averaged $1.24/gal, the widest annual average in EIA's retail series back to 1995. Three causes, from EIA's own price breakdown and the tax code:

  • 1.
    Refining and distribution take a bigger cut. In EIA's May 2026 breakdown, refining was 25% of the diesel price against 22% for gasoline, and distribution and marketing 23% against 15%. The NY Harbor diesel margin over Brent crude was $2.24/gal in September 2026, against $0.75 averaged over 2021 to 2025 (our arithmetic on EIA spot prices).
  • 2.
    Heating oil and diesel are practically the same fuel. EIA notes that fall and winter heating demand puts pressure on the diesel market, and that overseas demand for distillate, where diesel cars and distillate-fired power are more common, also affects US diesel prices.
  • 3.
    Higher fuel tax. The federal excise is 24.4 cents a gallon on diesel against 18.4 cents on gasoline, and some states widen the gap: Pennsylvania charges 74.1 cents on undyed diesel against 57.6 cents on gasoline in 2026.

Which state has the cheapest diesel fuel?+
The EIA weekly on-highway diesel survey does not answer that question, and this site will not pretend it does. EIA publishes a weekly diesel price for the United States, its five PADDs, three PADD 1 sub-districts, West Coast less California, and California. It publishes nothing for the other 49 states, so no federal state-by-state ranking exists. What the data does support is a district ranking: the cheapest EIA diesel district in the week of October 26, 2026 was Lower Atlantic (PADD 1C) at $5.890 and the most expensive was West Coast (PADD 5) at $7.329. State diesel excise rates, which are set in statute and do vary state by state, run from 8 cents in Alaska to 102 cents in California.
Why is diesel more expensive than gasoline?+
In the week of October 26, 2026, diesel ran $2.083/gal above regular gasoline ($6.352 against $4.269, both US national figures from the same EIA survey). In EIA's own breakdown for May 2026, crude oil was about the same cost per gallon in both fuels; the gap sat in refining (25% of the diesel price against 22% of gasoline's) and in distribution and marketing (23% against 15%). Heating oil is practically the same fuel, so winter and overseas distillate demand pull on diesel, and the federal excise is 24.4 cents a gallon against 18.4 for gasoline. How much does it cost to fill a semi-truck with diesel?+
A Class 8 semi-truck carries 200 to 300 gallons, typically two saddle tanks of 100 to 150 gallons each. At the $6.352/gal US average, a 200-gallon fill costs $1270 and a 300-gallon fill $1906. A typical fueling stop of 100 to 150 gallons runs $635 to $953. Most owner-operators fuel strategically rather than running a tank down.
Are truck-stop diesel prices different from gas station prices?+
No public survey splits truck-stop diesel from gas-station diesel: EIA's weekly on-highway price covers retail diesel outlets as a whole, so there is no published gap to quote. Compare posted prices on your route. Where truck stops do differ is fleet-card discounts: Comdata publishes up to 40 cents/gal at TA Petro on Total Advantage (50 on Comdata Max) and 10 cents at Pilot (20 on Comdata Max) for fleets of 20 or fewer trucks, while WEX and EFS discounts are negotiated by contract. Love's Express advertises at least 20 cents/gal at Love's for new qualified customers.
How much fuel does a semi-truck use per mile?+
Class 8 trucks average 6 to 8 mpg loaded on flat highways, 4 to 6 mpg loaded on hilly terrain or under heavy loads, and 8 to 10 mpg empty. At 7 mpg and $6.352/gal, fuel cost per mile is 91 cents, or $454 for a 500-mile day. At 6 mpg loaded and hilly, the same day costs $529. What is the best fleet fuel card for diesel discounts?+
For over-the-road truckers using multiple chains, Comdata typically offers the best discount - its advertised rates are up to 40 cents/gal at TA Petro, 10 cents at Pilot and 8 cents at Love's (for fleets of 20 or fewer trucks; larger fleets negotiate custom pricing). For owner-operators: EFS Fleet Card (WEX) discounts are negotiated by contract rather than published as a flat rate. Love's own Express card advertises at least 20 cents/gal at Love's for new qualified customers; Pilot's driver programme pays points rather than a published discount.
