EIA Weekly On-Highway Diesel Survey - Week of August 31, 2026
US AVERAGE DIESEL COST PER GALLON 2026

Truck-Stop Chains and Fleet-Card Discounts
Network scale and published fleet-card terms. There is no audited per-chain cash price to publish here: EIA surveys the retail market as a whole, not individual chains.
We do not publish a current cash price per chain. EIA surveys the retail market as a whole rather than individual chains, so no audited chain figure exists, and an unverified estimate sitting next to the $5.60 survey average would read as though it came from the same place. Discounts and network counts above are from each chain's published terms. Check the chain app for a live local price. Full comparison ->
Diesel Prices by EIA District
Hover or click any state. EIA publishes a weekly on-highway diesel price for the US, its districts and California, and for no other state. Every tile except California shows the figure for that state's EIA district and is labelled with it. Full map + rankings ->
EIA Weekly On-Highway Diesel Fuel Price survey, week of August 31, 2026. Only California (outlined) has its own EIA diesel series. The other 49 tiles show the figure for the EIA district that state sits in, which is why neighbouring states carry identical prices. Hover a tile to see which district.
Quick Trip Calculator
Fleet cards save $0.10-$0.40/gal at major chains. At 5,000 gal/month, that's $500-$2,000/month in savings.
Compare Fleet Fuel Cards ->Why Diesel Costs $5.60/Gal Right Now
Diesel runs $1.53/gal above regular gasoline (which averages $4.07) in August 2026. The spread is more than double the historical average. Three immediate factors:
- 1.Distillate inventories below the 5-year average. US distillate stocks have been running 10-15% below the 5-year average since late 2023. Tight supply pushes the NY Harbor crack spread above $1.40/gal.
- 2.ULSD refining costs more than gasoline. Ultra-low sulfur diesel requires hydrotreating - a process that uses hydrogen to remove sulfur compounds. This adds $0.20-$0.35/gal of refining cost versus regular gasoline production.
- 3.Heating oil and diesel are chemically identical. Both are middle distillates from the same refinery cut. Spring 2026 heating demand in northern Europe ran longer than seasonal models projected, competing with US diesel exports.

How We Got These Numbers
Every price figure: EIA Weekly On-Highway Diesel Fuel Price survey, week of August 31, 2026, read through the EIA Open Data API and checked against EIA's own published tables before publishing. Prices are collected Monday morning and released the same afternoon ET.
State-level prices: there is no EIA weekly diesel price for 49 of the 50 states on this site. California is the exception. Every other state carries the figure for the EIA district it sits in, labelled on the page with the district name and series id. We do not interpolate, weight or borrow from a commercial feed to manufacture a state number, which is why neighbouring states inside one district show the same price.
Truck-stop chain prices:indicative national retail estimates from each chain's published fuel-price tool (pilotflyingj.com, loves.com, ta-petro.com). These are not EIA figures and are not survey data. Confirm at the chain's app before fueling.
Reader questions: anything on this page can be queried at questions@dieselcostpergallon.com. A person reads them, answers name the survey table and week the figure came from, and where a question shows that this page left something out, the answer is added here.
