What readers paid for diesel in Iowa

Prices readers report from the pump: what they paid, where, and how they paid. Each one is a single fill on the date shown, not a survey average; the weekly EIA figures elsewhere on this page are the survey.

No reader has reported a price in Iowa yet. Yours would be the first.

What did you pay for diesel?

Tell us the price at your last fill and see how it compares with the government survey for your state. Your report goes on this site as a dated reader report; we publish your state and the first three digits of your ZIP, nothing else.

No account, no email. Prices far outside the usual range for your state are checked before they appear. See our privacy policy.

Read this as a district figure, not a state figure. The EIA weekly on-highway diesel survey prices the United States, its districts and California, and nothing else. It does not price Iowa. The number above is Midwest (PADD 2), series EMD_EPD2D_PTE_R20_DPG, and it is the closest published federal figure for Iowa. We do not estimate a price for Iowa from it. 6 of Iowa's neighbouring states sit in the same district and therefore show the same price below.

EIA does not publish a weekly on-highway diesel price for Iowa. The federal survey prices the district Iowa sits in, Midwest (PADD 2), at $6.480 per gallon in the week of October 26, 2026 (series EMD_EPD2D_PTE_R20_DPG), $0.13 above the US average of $6.352. Pump prices inside the district vary around that figure.

Off-road (dyed) diesel in Iowa

Red-dyed diesel is the same fuel as clear diesel, sold without highway fuel taxes for uses off the public road. How Iowa treats it, checked 25 October 2026. Rules for every state are on the off-road diesel guide.

Temporary relief, 5 October 2026 to 4 February 2027: Vehicles hauling listed farm commodities (corn, soybeans, hay, feed, fertilizer and others) may use dyed diesel on Iowa highways without state penalties. (Governor's disaster proclamation, Iowa DOT notice of 6 October 2026; reported in the news, the order text was not found on an official site). Source
Federal: dyed diesel skips the federal diesel tax except 0.1c. IRS news release IR-2026-122 (14 October 2026) waives federal penalties for highway use of dyed diesel from 1 October 2026 to 31 December 2026; state rules below still apply.
56.8ca gallon of per-gallon tax skipped: 24.3c federal and 32.5c Iowa taxes and fees, though sales tax may apply instead (below).
Iowa fuel tax on dyed diesel
Dyed diesel is always sold free of Iowa's 32.5c fuel tax.
Sales tax
6% sales tax applies unless an exemption does. Exempt with a fuel exemption certificate: fuel for implements of husbandry in farming, grain drying, livestock-building heat and processing.
Who may use it
Unlicensed vehicles, stationary engines, farm implements and nonhighway machinery. Not for idling, power take-offs or reefer units.
Penalty for highway use
$500 for a first violation, $1,000 for a second within three years, $2,000 after that, plus the tax.
Roadside testing
Yes: law enforcement, Revenue and DOT staff may inspect and search any fuel tank.
Buying it
No permit; give the seller a fuel exemption certificate for farm or processing use to avoid sales tax.

Ask how a number on this page was built

Every figure on this site is read out of a published federal survey, which means there is always a real answer to where it came from. Send the question and a person reads it. Answers name the table, the series and the survey week, so you can go and look at the same row we did.

Where a question shows up a gap, the answer goes onto the page it came from as well as into the reply. If your question and its answer would be useful to other drivers we may publish an anonymised version, and we ask you before we do.
