The EIA diesel price is the federal government's weekly survey of retail on-highway diesel. Fuel surcharge clauses in freight contracts can name it as their weekly index, and it is the source of every price on this site. How the EIA diesel survey works

When. Prices are collected Monday morning and published the same Monday afternoon ET (Tuesday when Monday is a federal holiday). This page and the rest of the site update after each release.

What. The price of No. 2 diesel for on-highway use at retail, taxes included, in dollars a gallon. Off-road (dyed) diesel, which is sold without road fuel tax for off-road use, is not in this series; see off-road diesel.

Where. The United States, the five PADD districts, three East Coast sub-districts (New England, Central Atlantic, Lower Atlantic), West Coast less California, and California, the only state with its own weekly diesel series.

Getting it from EIA. The weekly table is at eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel. The US series ID is EMD_EPD2D_PTE_NUS_DPG; programmatic access is through the EIA Open Data API v2, route petroleum/pri/gnd. EIA data is a U.S. Government work in the public domain.

FAQ

What is the EIA diesel price this week? +
EIA's weekly on-highway diesel price for the United States was $6.352 a gallon in the week of October 26, 2026 (series EMD_EPD2D_PTE_NUS_DPG), +$0.076 on the week of October 19, 2026 and +$2.634 on a year earlier. The figure is a retail price including taxes, for No. 2 diesel sold for on-highway use.
When does EIA publish diesel prices? +
Weekly. Prices are collected Monday morning and published the same Monday afternoon ET (Tuesday when Monday is a federal holiday). Each figure is dated by the Monday of its survey week, so a price read later in the week still belongs to that Monday's survey.
Does EIA publish diesel prices by state? +
Only for California. The weekly diesel survey publishes the United States, the five PADD districts, three East Coast sub-districts, West Coast less California, and California. Every other state is covered only through the district it sits in, which is why this site's state pages show their district's figure and say so.
Which EIA district has the cheapest diesel this week? +
Lower Atlantic (PADD 1C), at $5.890 a gallon in the week of October 26, 2026. The most expensive area EIA published was California, at $8.155.

Ask how a number on this page was built

Every figure on this site is read out of a published federal survey, which means there is always a real answer to where it came from. Send the question and a person reads it. Answers name the table, the series and the survey week, so you can go and look at the same row we did.

Where a question shows up a gap, the answer goes onto the page it came from as well as into the reply. If your question and its answer would be useful to other drivers we may publish an anonymised version, and we ask you before we do.
